For
about a year now, Replacements, Ltd. has been honored to be selected as a display
venue for the official sterling silver service for the battleship USS North Carolina. We
recently learned that the USS Battleship Commission has granted this extraordinary
and historic service an additional one year display with us. To say that this is simply a service is to underestimate the grandeur of these historic pieces. It is actually five different sterling silver services in one, including the punch bowl, tea, water, wine, and cigar services.
This gargantuan service was commissioned on August 15, 1907
by the North Carolina General Assembly and was to be used aboard the USS North
Carolina (ACR12). The service was ordered from H. Mahler Silversmiths in Raleigh,
NC who, in turn, had the service manufactured by Dominick and Haff of New York.
Dominick and Haff was later purchased by Reed and Barton. For a brief period,
this silver service was decommissioned for use at sea. It became state property
and was used in the North Carolina Governor’s Mansion. Over the years,
several pieces were lost, including the wine carafe stoppers, a punch cup, a
match holder, and the humidor. Today, the state of North Carolina is looking
to find these items and has enlisted the help of Replacements, Ltd. in the search!
Currently, North Carolina preserves and maintains the battleship USS North Carolina
as a tour site in Wilmington. This very popular tourism destination is a source
of great pride for North Carolinians, and Replacements, Ltd. is happy to help
with the care and display of this silver from the battleship, on loan to us by
the USS Battleship Commission.
